Self-actualization or Reproduction

Interesting article about the "new" Maslow's Hierarchy of needs.   Controversy anyone?  What does this mean for education?

  1. I think all I can say as far as education goes is that this is ridiculous at best. Self actualization encompasses much more than simple mating and parenting. (While it may sound as though i am building the straw-man on their article i still have to proceed here) Self actualization, as i understand it, is the act of becoming the you that you want to be. making your self (not yourself) into the self you want it to be. In an age of western history in which people are acquiring mates at later ages or not at all I just don't see that as the top of the pyramid. It can be a piece of the puzzle but is simply not enough to encompass who people want to be. Can parenting, marriage and acquisition of a mate be part? yes. Are they a replacement for being who you want to be? NO! What about career, role in community, citizenship, volunteerism... FREAKING HOBBIES of all minute things-- these all are pieces of being who you want to be... do we disregard them? Self actualization isnt measurable and the more we break the human mind down into measurable simple concepts the more we lose sight of the part that makes it human.

Okay... im done freaking out now...
